CACTUS FLOWERS 3.5/5
by Julie Tyos
Yvette Tollar just may be a huge sensation in the music world with her debut release entitled Cactus Flowers. Her web site ( www.yvettetollar.com ) describes her as ‘a modern jazz vocalist and composer who is known for her warm tone and soulful style.’ Her compositions are an eclectic blend of euro jazz harmonies, contemporary grooves and poignant lyrics. “Yvette brings jazz vocals to a new arena that encompasses more than just nostalgic torch sounds. By reaching out to embrace influences from world music, fusion and urban sounds she creates music that is both refreshing and relevant.” She proves this statement true right from the beginning with the song ‘Cactus Flowers.’ Her voice is smooth, pure and at times almost haunting. The mood of the music changes and evokes emotion over time. It’s a perfect album to listen to while unwinding because of its mellow sounds. Tracks includ e ‘Ugli Fruit Tango,’ ‘Scarlets and Golds,’ ‘Let the Machine Get It’ and ‘Lew.’ Each has it’s own distinct identity and flavour. ‘Cactus Flowers’ in particular is exceptional. The songs are at times accompanied by saxophone, piano, wind tube and bamboo flutes, which make for a varied sound which is aesthetically pleasing. Yvette’s most powerful instrument by far is her voice, combined with her music because it creates a sound that is both refreshing and spellbinding. She stands out from other female vocalists of her kind. She recently received an award for composition from the Ontario Arts’ Council for her work, and it is predicted that she will have continued success in the years to come with her unique style.
